"The Shanghai Municipal Chapter, on its second term, will consolidate the opinions of Koreans living in this area on the basis of their correct awareness of national unification and implant the right views of unification among Korean students studying in Shanghai. The Shanghai Municipal Chapter will make active contributions to developing the economies of Korea and China as an organization representing the Korean communities in this area, in addition to performing the action plan of the Council," said Lee Chang-ho, reassigned Head of the Shanghai Municipal Chapter, in his opening speech.

Lee Hun-bok, Vice-chairperson of the China Municipal Chapter, explained the history of the China Municipal Chapter. "A total of 277 persons in 5 municipal chapters (Beijing, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Shanghai, and Guangzhou) were designated as members of the 16th Council. The position of Vice-chairperson of the China Municipal Chapter was established to cope with the growing roles and responsibilities of the municipal chapters; in fact, the Shanghai Municipal Chapter stands in the middle of 5 municipal chapters in China. I hope the Shanghai Municipal Chapter will be more active than ever in performing the unification movement,” he said.
According to Hyun Kyung-dae, Executive Vice-chairperson of the Council, the relations between Korea and China have been strengthened further by President Park's recent visit to China. Specifying the "Building of foundation of peaceful unification" in the four keynotes of government administration indicates the strong will of the Chairperson of the Council toward national unification. He asked the Shanghai Municipal Chapter and its members to maximize the achievements of President Park's visit to China and support the government's consistent policy toward the North with profound understanding and mind while living in China, which wields huge influence on the unification of the Korean Peninsula.

"It is meaningful to launch the Shanghai Municipal Chapter of the Council just after the summit talks between Korea and China. Shanghai is a historical place for Koreans since the Provisional Government of Korea was set up here a century ago; Patriot Yoon Bong-gil's resistance to Japanese Imperialism took place here, too. I hope the Shanghai Municipal Chapter makes its best efforts in leading the unification movement and spreading the strong will of the government for national unification to the Koreans in this region and form public opinion among the influential Chinese -- that the unification of the Korean Peninsula is also beneficial to China,” Deputy Consul General Lee Gang-guk said in his congratulatory speech.
