[Opening of the 42nd Youth Standing Committee ]
Discussing “Awareness of the Youth on North Korea’s Nuclear Problems and their Countermeasures”
  • View of the Standing Committee Conference

The NUAC Youth Standing Committee (Chief: Do Hee-yoon) held its 42nd Standing Committee meeting to discuss “Awareness of the Youth on North Korea’s Nuclear Problems and their Countermeasures” on Feb. 22.
According to Chief Do Hee-yoon, South Korea is in danger at the national level due to the 4th nuclear experiment, closure of Gaeseong Industrial Complex, etc. “At a time like this, youths need to recognize the exact danger we face. Thus, today's presentation and debate are crucial," he said.
Secretary General Bae Jung-ho noted that the meeting, which sought to talk about the awareness of the youth on North Korea’s nuclear problems and their countermeasures, was extremely timely in such grave situation. The Secretary General expects "constructive solutions to unite the people and coordinate national opinion."

Standing Committee Member Oh Kyung-sub (Research Fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification) explained that there is a paradigm shift in the unification environment after the nuclear and long-range missile experiment. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of the youth properly understanding the issue of North Korea and its nuclear problems.
The following ideas were suggested: strengthening education on the “threats of North Korea's nuclear weapons and reality of security”; more actively assisting varsity clubs that deal with unification to spread sympathy for unification; and hosting small talks between the youth and professionals of NUAC.

In the Standing Committee debate that followed, diverse ideas were suggested. First is to hold a real-time Q&A session to help the youth understand better every time there is a North-Korea-related national crisis. Updating and diversifying contents in the Unification Security Exhibition Hall, opening more North Korea and security-related lectures at universities, and more ideas were proposed as well.

The contents of this debate, integrated with the results of other Standing Committees, will be reported to the Chairperson in March.
