The Africa Chapter (head: Hwang Jae-kil) gave a unification-themed lecture with specific focus on North Korea’s human right issues in Stellenbosch, Republic of South Africa on July 5. With 450 teenagers in attendance, Ji Seong-ho, president of NAUH (Now, Action & Unity for NK Human Rights), a youth organization that advocates North Korean human rights, spoke about the life and human rights situation of North Korean citizens.
Mr. Ji Seong-ho, a North Korean defector himself, talked about the true nature of the Kim Jeong-eun regime, the life of an average North Korean citizen, and his own escape from the North. He went on to explain the human rights situation in North Korea including how Koreans residing overseas can contribute to the unification of the Korean peninsula.
After Stellenbosch, Mr. Ji gave another lecture on the reality of life in North Korea in Gaborone, capital of the Republic of Botswana, on July 6. He gave a total of nine such lectures beginning June 26 in major cities in the Republic of South Africa including Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Cape Town, where many Koreans reside.
Africa Chapter Head Hwang Jae-kil praised the conferences. “Korean residents living in Africa, a faraway land from North Korea and its realities, became more informed of and interested in unification through this opportunity. We will continue to deepen understanding and promote sympathy for the cause of unification of the Korean peninsula in Africa through the National Unification Advisory Council’s unification efforts,” he added.
