The Toronto Municipal Chapter in Canada (Head: Choi Jin-hak) held a special lecture on "Speaking about peaceful reunification and myself" on March 4 at the St. George campus of University of Toronto to celebrate the "Day of Longing for Peaceful Unification," with 100 attendees including 70 Korean undergraduates living abroad.
At this conference co-sponsored with HanVoice (Secretary General: Christopher Kim), a human rights group of North Korean defectors, Choi Jin-hak, the head of the Toronto Municipal Chapter, and Lawyer Kim Ui-cheol, the founder of HanVoice, gave lectures on the reunification of the Korean peninsula and the human rights of North Korea, respectively. Head Choi Jin-hak stressed that, for the future of the Korean society, establishment of the identity of the young generation is necessary, and that, with this in mind, we should actively strive to realize the reunification of the Korean peninsula. According to Kim Ui-cheol, in order to improve human rights in North Korea, various means of contact are needed, including the attention and participation of the young generation.
The Toronto Municipal Chapter held a special mass on March 6 at St. Andrew Kim Catholic Church to herald the day of longing for peaceful reunification, with 1000 believers and residents attending.
The Toronto Municipal Chapter also held a North Korean human rights·security forum themed "How to help liberate North Korea and render its nuke useless?" on March 22 at the Ottawa federal government.
During the forum co-sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion (Chairperson: Song Sung-bak) and the Council for Human Rights in North Korea (Chairperson: Lee Gyeong-bok), presentations were given by Jeong Kwang-il, representative of South Korea’s North Korean defector group "No Chain" (survivor from the Yodok concentration camp), Henry Song, representative of "No Chain" North America, Lee Kyung-bok, head of the North Korea Human Rights Committee, and Cho Seung, executive director (former North Korean defector studying abroad) of the Council for Human Rights in North Korea. Irwin Cotler (former Minister of Justice) and Alex Neve, representative of Amnesty International Canada, served as guest speakers and gave speeches on the reality of North Korea’s human rights situation.
