Hyun Kyung-dae, Executive Vice-chairperson of the National Unification Advisory Council (NUAC), gives National Unification Lecture for Oceania Region Explained “Unification Bonanza” to Korean Residents -- “We are assured of the unification”
  • Australia is the Southern Gateway to the Eurasia Initiative
Hyun gave a lecture on national unification last Aug. 5 in Sydney, Australia during his tour of Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) to explain the “Unification Bonanza” to the Korean residents in the region and the council members.
Hyun talked about “Unification Bonanza – Beginning of Peace and Prosperity of the World” at Waterview Lake Room in Sydney. “The Unification Bonanza described by President Park Geun-hye will not only light up North Korea, which looks like sunken into the sea at night, but also bring blessings to the whole world including Oceania,” he said.
A total of 120 people including Lee Sook-jin, head of the Australia Municipal Chapter of NUAC, Lee Whee-jin, Korean consul general to Sydney, Song Suk-jun, President of the Korean Association in Sydney, Lee Dong-wu, Chairman of the Korean Association in Oceania, Korean residents in the region, and council members attended the lecture.
“The Eurasian economic region can combine EU, Russia, China, and Northeast Asia in the west and ASEAN countries and Oceania in the south. Australia will be the southern base accounting for more than 90% of the global economy. The unification of the Korean peninsula may be expanded to the surrounding countries as well as Oceania,” Hyun added.
He explained the possibility of expanding the Eurasia Initiative emphasized by President Park, noting that, when a unified Korea grows into a gateway connecting the Eurasia continent, Southeast Asia, Pacific, and Australia can be included in it.
Hyun presented satellite photos showing the Korean peninsula at night. “We are angered at the appearance of North Korea where 25 million Koreans live, changing into the Old Stone Age every night. North Korea should accept the Dresden Declaration of President Park and come out of the darkness and step into the path of exchange, cooperation, and peaceful unification. The Dresden Declaration contains a ‘1,000-Day Maternity Health Package’ to supply the nutrition required to form the brain of infants 0 ~ 2 ages who are seriously malnourished. The declaration aims at the unification of the Korean peninsula and prosperous and peaceful future of human beings, beyond feeding the hungry people. The North Korean regime should accept it to normalize inter-Korean relations,” he stated.

He also emphasized that the principle of promoting national unification should be based on the constitution. “The prerequisite is to achieve national unification based on free democracy and peaceful method as stipulated in the constitution. Such unification should be achieved by the leadership of the Republic of Korea. We may encounter lots of difficulties and conflicts in the course of unification, but we have potential energy and experience, with Korea becoming the World’s 12th Biggest Economic Power and 8th Largest Trade Giant from one of the poorest countries in the world during the past century. Therefore, we should promote national unification with confidence that we can turn the challenge into opportunity,” he explained.
He noted that most of the advanced countries are limited to a 1% growth rate. “Note, however, that we can enter into an era of high-speed growth if the natural and human resources of North Korea can be combined with the advanced capital and technology of South Korea. World-renowned investing institutes such as Goldman Sachs forecast that, if Korea would be united with South Korea in the lead, Korea will emerge as a leading economic power in the world,” he added.
Hyun cited Michael Kirby, an Australian and the chairman of Commission of Inquiry (COI), a UN commission tasked with investigating the status of human rights in North Korea, for his efforts to improve human rights in North Korea.
He added that Australia is a more advanced country in human rights than any other country, and that it has been questioning the human rights in North Korea and requesting the correction of the issue to Pyeongyang. “All of us laud Michael Kirby, chairman of UN COI, for boldly accusing North Korea of barbaric suppression of human rights before the whole world,” he added.

According to Hyun, if we could not achieve national unification when the opportunity for such comes due to our insufficient preparation, we will burden our future generation with our own duty. We should prepare ourselves thoroughly to obtain the firm will of the people for unification, international support, and choice of the North Korean people, he stressed.
Hyun gave his second lecture to the Korean residents in New Zealand on Aug. 9 at New Zealand Auckland Stamford Plaza Hotel. The attendees applauded Hyun during the lecture. “I have had a vague idea of national unification so far, but now I have a clear picture. Korea should be unified for the development of Korea and Korean residents in Australia,“ one of them said.
A total of 170 people including Lee Byung-in, head of the New Zealand Municipal Chapter of NUAC, Park Il-ho, manager of the Auckland Branch, Kim Sung-hyuck, chairman of the Korean Association in Auckland, NUAC members, and Korean residents attended the lecture. In particular, Congresswoman Melissa Lee, the first Korean to become a lawmaker of New Zealand, graced the event.
