An inaugural session to organize 4 ASEAN municipal chapters was held starting with the north region of Southeast Asia (Aug. 12), followed by Southwest Asia (Aug. 14), Vietnam (Aug. 16), and southern branch of Southeast Asia (Aug. 19), raising the expectations and interest of local societies.

Seung Eun-ho, Vice-chairperson of the ASEAN Provincial Assembly, delivered his congratulatory address on the occasion of launching said 4 municipal chapters. "Organizing the 16th ASEAN Provincial Assembly was made possible after the home government favorably assessed the ability of Korean communities in this region and the municipal chapters in our region to pave the way for making contributions to implementing the mission of realizing the unification of our fatherland," he said.
He added that, even though they are living out of their homeland, they should be proud of themselves since they are not a third party in performing the supreme mission of their fatherland -- national unification -- but are the leading characters in realizing national unification. “Therefore, we who are living in the ASEAN regions should be united under the strong will of democratic and peaceful unification of our fatherland," he stressed.

The inaugural session to launch the municipal chapters proceeded with the presentation of letter of assignment and designation, followed by the selection of the executives of the 16th Municipal Chapter, report on the plans of projects, significance of the Council, report on the action plan of the 16th Council, and lecture on the Park Geun-hye Administration’s inter-Korean policy.

The inaugural session to launch the 16th Northern South East Asia Municipal Chapter was held on Aug. 12 at the Makati Intercontinental Hotel in Manila, Philippines and attended by the Council members in the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Lee Hyuk, Korean Ambassador to the Philippines, members of the Korean Community, Philippines-Korea War Veterans, and 120 distinguished guests.

"We will develop various businesses such as unification education program to foster the next-generation unification cultural program. The unity and most positive participation of the members of the Council are absolutely required to develop such programs," said Lee Yeong-baek, Head of the Southeast Asia Municipal Chapter in his opening address.

Ambassador Lee also gave his congratulatory message. "No other countries allow their overseas residents to participate in the state policy of the home government in the capacity of constitutional agency except Korea. The inaugural session to launch the 16th Southwestrn Asia Municipal Chapter was held on Aug. 14 at Swissotele Concord Hotel in Bangkok and attended by members in Thailand, Nepal, Laos, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Cambodia, and Pakistan and local VIPs as well as Hong Soon-pyeong, Head of the Yangju Municipal Chapter, which has sisterhood relations with Korea.

"Let us consolidate all of our abilities to make contributions to the unification of our fatherland through active participation in the Council," Head Chae Kyu-joon, said in his opening address.

The Southwestrn Asia Municipal Chapter consists of a multiple number of countries in the region, carrying out various activities to share the conscience of functions of the members to the Council as well as opportunities for mutual communication among them who live in different countries in the region.

The inaugural session to launch the 16th Vietnam Municipal Chapter was held on Aug. 16 at Lotte Legend Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City, with the Council members and 90 guests attending.

Jeon Jong-kyu, Head of the Vietnam Municipal Chapter reminded the members of the Council of their responsibilities. "Staying in Vietnam, we are in envy of their unification. We will endeavor to let the Vietnamese know of our firm will and intention of unification policy during the term of the 16th council," he vowed.
