The 2013 Women’s Conference of Asia and Oceania was held by the Australia Municipal Chapter from Dec. 5 till Dec. 7 at Sydney Novotel Darling Harbor. 100 female council members from 16 cities in Korea, senior members and female members from 6 municipal chapters in Oceania and South East Asia attended.

Lee Sook-jin, head of the Australian Municipal Chapter, welcomed the attendants in her opening speech by saying, “I wish the female leaders’ power of social integration proven by Australian history can be applied to our determination of ‘Happy Era of National Unification Opened by Women.’”

Seung Eun-ho, Vice-chairperson of ASEAN Municipal Chapter said in his congratulatory address, “Softness, consideration, patience and tolerance of the women members of NUAC are expected to relieve the reality of a national division and establish a warm mood for national unification.”

Representative Ha Tae-kyung, Ambassador to Australia Kim Bong-hyun, Consul General to Sydney Lee Hwi-jin, July Bishop, Foreign Minister of Australia, and Victor Dominello, Multi Culture Minister of Australia, greeted the attendants, which indicates much interest in the event by the Australian sides as well.

The Conference proceeded with a panel discussion by the specialists, followed by a group discussion among the attendants and a presentation of female members’ activities.

Attendants listened to the topics presented by the specialists at a panel discussion and they exchanged their views on the issues of △ settlements of North Korean refugees in South Korea △ possibility of change of North Korea △ unification of Korean Peninsula and roles of Korean women thereof △ nuclear threat of North Korea

    Group Discussion

Valuable information was exchanged during the group discussion as well as presentations on the activities of each municipal chapter to establish future activity plans. In particular, female members from the domestic municipal chapters introduced their activities to share the know-how for promoting unification movements both at home and abroad.

This Women’s Conference was the first of its kind for the Asia and Oceania region, so it was evaluated as a valuable opportunity to confirm the possibility of “Happy Unification Era Opened by Women” through positive participation of the attendants.
