The National Unification Advisory Council (Executive Vice-chairperson: Hyun Kyung-dae) launched the Guangzhou Municipal Chapter (Head: Lim Dong-hyun) on July 15 at Westin Hotel in Guangzhou, China.

A total of 140 persons celebrated the launch of the Guangzhou Municipal Chapter including Hyun Kyung-dae, Executive Vice-chairperson of the Council, Consul General Yang Chang-soo to Guangzhou, Lee Hun-bok, Vice-chairperson of the China Municipal Chapter, Prof. Yoo Ho-yeol of Korea Univ., Yoon Ho-jung, Chairperson of the Korean Chamber of Commerce in Guangzhou, Huh Byung-ha, Chairperson of the Korean Chamber of Commerce in Shenzhen, and Lim Dong-hyun, Head of Guangzhou Municipal Chapter. Participants pledged to fulfil their roles in "building the foundation of Happy, Peaceful Unification.”

The first part of the inaugural session was the presentation of letters of designation to the heads, secretaries, and members and reporting of the action plan of the 16th Council and Guangzhou Municipal Chapter.

On behalf of the President, Hyun, Executive Vice-chairperson of the Council, presented the letter of designation to Lim Dong-hyun, Head of Guangzhou Municipal Chapter, and Kim Kwang-woon, Secretary, and Lee Min-jae and Kim Soon-ho who represented the other members.

  Opening speech by Lim Dong-hyun

  "The 48 members of the Guangzhou Municipal Chapter will devote themselves to achieving the peaceful unification of our fatherland and accept the mission given to us as a calling from the state and the heavens. We will do our best to inform the influential Chinese people of the appropriateness of unification of the Korean Peninsula and to develop Korean communities here in Guangzhou," said Lim Dong-hyun, reassigned Head of the Guangzhou Municipal Chapter, in his opening speech.

• In his greetings, Hyun Kyung-dae, Executive Vice-chairperson of the Council, said that President Park's recent state visit to China was a valuable opportunity for sharing the visions for the future of the two countries as well as for mutual development based on the close cooperation made for the past two decades.
  According to him, our consistent message to Beijing is to resolve the nuclear issue of North Korea and establish a new Korean Peninsula where the people can travel freely and each individual's dream can come true. President Park emphasized that such new Korean Peninsula would be beneficial to China and Northeast Asia, and President Xi Jinping agreed. Park Geun-hye's administration has strong will toward national unification for lasting peace to take root on the Korean Peninsula, and such is included in the keynotes of government administration. Hyun also reminded the participants of the recent favorable international environment, i.e., the summits of USA and China reaffirmed their firm position of not allowing the nuclear weapons of North Korea.
  He asked the Guangzhou Municipal Chapter members to lead the unification movement and find out what they can do for the unification of our fatherland, in the very place where the reformation and opening of China started.

  Lee Hun-bok, Vice-chairperson of the China Municipal Chapter, said that the number of members of the 5 municipal chapters in China increased thanks to their efforts for the unification movement. The post of vice-chairperson was given to the China Municipal Chapter by the Council headquarters in Seoul. He asked the members to pursue the practical unification movement by advising the leading circles of China that the peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula is in keeping with the flow of history, which nobody can reject, and that such is beneficial to both China and Korea.

  "The 15th Guangzhou Municipal Chapter held the ‘Unification Golden Bell’ program twice to encourage the students in this area to have recognition of national unification. I believe the 16th Guangzhou Municipal Chapter will make its best efforts to contribute to the peaceful unification of our fatherland in accordance with the government policy. I would like to remind you of the importance of establishing the Korean School in Guangzhou to grow our young generation to be pillars of national unification,” Consul General Yang Chang-soo said in his congratulatory message.

Meanwhile, Hyun, Executive Vice-chairperson of the Council, had a meeting with 10 executive members of the Guangzhou Municipal Chapter on July 14 to discuss the operation of the Guangzhou Municipal Chapter and collect public opinion on unification through them.

Hyun, Executive Vice-chairperson, paid a visit to the consulate general to discuss the unification movement of compatriots in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, China.
