  • Lectures given on national unification in Malaysia and Thailand; Park Geun-hye administration’s unification/North Korean policy explained
  • A lecture session was held on March 27 and 28, 2013 in Malaysia and Thailand to encourage people to have correct understanding of inter-Korea relations as well as the security situation on the Korean Peninsula amid the North's continued provocations and the Park Geun-hye administration's unification/North Korean policy. In his lecture, Mr. Lee Su-seok, researcher at the Institute for National Security Strategy, diagnosed the regime of Kim Jong-un, who marked his first anniversary of inheriting power from his deceased father, and analyzed the current inter-Korea relations.

For his part, Mr. Lee Yeon-gu explained the Park Geun-hye administration's objectives of carrying out state affairs and basic policies along with policies concerning unification and North Korea. According to him, the core of the administration's policies concerning unification and North Korea was the normalization of inter-Korea relations through the Korean Peninsula Trust-Building Process, i.e., reinforcement of deterrence and national security from a short-term perspective and normalization of inter-Korea relations and realization of sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula from the mid- and long-term perspectives.

He went on to add that the initiative for the Korean Peninsula Trust-Building Process gave new expectations to observers amid the prolonged rigid relations between the two Koreas following the sinking of naval ship Cheonan and bombing of Yeonpyeongdo Island, but that it came across a stumbling block due to the North's third nuclear test. "As disclosed by President Park Gyeun-hye in her commemorative speech on March 1, 2013, the Administration will act on a policy focusing on the building of trust toward the North based on the stance of responding to the North's provocations with strong countermeasures and firm deterrence," he explained.

Mr. Kim Un-sik, a policy researcher, gave a briefing on the plan for the promotion of business in 2013 and the composition of the 16th-term council members.

The lecture session was held with about 100 people attending -- including NUAC council members and representatives of local residents -- at the Corus Hotel Kuala Lumpur and Dusit Thani Hotel Bangkok, respectively.
