  • Having carried out positive activities for national unification, NUAC council members have started waging a campaign for the reinvigoration of traditional markets to put the spirit of noblesse oblige into practice and help put an end to the conflicts between people from different walks of life. Domestic provincial assemblies and municipal chapters purchased articles to be used for the rite of paying homage to deceased ancestors on Lunar New Year in traditional markets.

On February 4, 14 Heads of municipal chapters including former Vice-chairperson Hong Jong-gil, standing members, and NUAC members carried out said activities in Nambu Market in Jeonju. NUAC council members of the Iksan-si (Jeonbuk) Municipal Chapter performed similar activities in Nambu Market in Iksan and Pungmul Market in Hwangdeung-myeon. NUAC members of the Guri-si (Gyeonggi-do) Municipal Chapter purchased goods worth more than 100,000 won per person at a traditional market -- which is about 40 years old -- in Guri in an effort to reinvigorate traditional markets and donated them to a senior citizens’ center in Inchang-dong, Guri.

Provincial assemblies and municipal chapters decided to distribute PR leaflets on the streets, encouraging people to take part in the invigoration of traditional markets all year round and link the activities with the operation of unification-related lecture sessions. They also agreed to purchase gift certificates worth more than 100,000 won per person, which could be used at traditional markets during the Lunar New Year and Chuseok shopping seasons.

With 20,000 NUAC council members purchasing goods worth more than 100,000 won at traditional markets on Lunar New Year and Chuseok, such will go a long way in energizing traditional markets.

They also agreed to hold unification-related sessions in a way that can help rejuvenate traditional markets, such as gift certificates for traditional markets given as prizes for unification-related quiz winners. Women NUAC council members will also link their voluntary activities with traditional markets.
