Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do - “Unification Hope Farm” planting event with North Korean refugees
Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, 2016-05-17

The Gwangju Municipal Chapter (head: Park Jong-seon) of Gyeonggi-do held the event of planting crops in the Unification Hope Farm with North Korean refugees last May 17, from 10:00am to 12:00pm, at the Unification Hope Farm located in Toechon-myeon, Gwangju-si with around 50 participants including North Korean refugee residents, council members, and government officials from the Gwangju Police Station and City Hall.

During the planting event, crops like sweet potatoes, chili peppers, and vegetables for wraps were planted so that North Korean refugee residents who are unskilled in farming can participate in the event without difficulty. Furrows were named Community, Harmony, Cooperation, Hope, Love, Sharing, Peace, Unification, and Happiness for added meaning.

The farm site, which covers approximately 660m2, was provided free of charge by Youth Standing Committee Chief Ham Byeong-sik. The Unification Hope Farm will be managed by the Youth Standing Committee of the Gwangju Municipal Chapter, which will grow the crops for about 6 months from May to the harvesting period in October along with council members and North Korean refugee residents.
