The Chilgok Municipal Chapter (head: Lee Soo-hun) of Gyeongsangbuk-do held a joint memorial service on August 17 to offer consolation and pray for the repose of 42 US military prisoners massacred by North Korean soldiers during the Korean War at the foot of a mountain in the Agok-ri 303 hill of Jigosan Mountain in Waegwan.
Second Lieutenant Shafer, administrative officer at the 84th Ordinance Company of the 6th Ordinance Battalion, evoked a solemn atmosphere by citing the victim names and ranks of 42 military prisoners.
Lieutenant Colonel Baker (commander of the 6th Ordinance Battalion), who participated in the memorial service, introduced himself, noting how he came to the US Armed Forces in Korea after his grandfather who was a veteran of the Korean War and his father who had also joined the US Forces in Korea. Lieutenant Colonel Baker expressed sadness over how his grandfather fought in the Korean War at a young age 66 years ago and died as a prisoner of war and also conveyed his gratitude to the Korean people for their everlasting respect for the slain US soldiers.
