The North European Chapter (Head: Choi Wol-ah) held an event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Korea's independence and the 70 years of separation of North and South Korea on March 21, 2015 at Renaissance Duesseldorf Hotel in Bonn, Germany.
Kwon Young-sae, consul general of the Bonn Office of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Federal Republic of Germany, was invited to deliver a speech on unification. In his speech titled "Peaceful Unification of the Korean Peninsula and Diplomacy for Unification," Consul General Kwon stressed the importance of national security and understanding of the cost of unification and explained the diplomacy of trust for peaceful unification. His speech was followed by a session wherein next-generation Korean Germans and next-generation local youth exchanged ideas on Korea and unification of the Korean Peninsula. Katrina Kim, a senior police officer, and Jessica Truzkins, who has previously worked as a teacher at a local Korean language school, drew positive responses from the audience by making their presentations on how to improve inter-generation communication and narrow the gap between old and new generations in fluent Korean.
The audience was briefed on the activities of the members of the 16th council; this was followed by a drum performance by council member Kang Hyeon-suk, a song number by Kim Young-sik, a member of the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Korea's independence, and an impromptu poem-writing and recitation contest for the guests of the event.
