The NUAC Religion and Welfare Standing Committee (Chief: Lee Su-gu) held its 3rd Standing Committee meeting on Feb. 23 at 3:00 pm to debate on “Religion and Welfare Sectors' Approach after the Nuclear Experiment.”

The meeting took time to search for approaches that religion and welfare sectors should take amid the drastically changing unification environment after the 4th nuclear experiment and long-range missile provocation.

Citing the historical case of Eastern Roman Empire, Chief Lee Su-gu stressed that it is more important to bond internally and relieve internal conflicts at times like this. Additionally, having common thoughts could be stronger than North Korea's nuclear weapons, he said.

In his opening remarks, Secretary General Bae Jung-ho noted that NUAC has done everything during his one-month-term as Secretary General to gather the will of people, including simultaneously starting a one-man protest, carrying out promotion by putting up banners, and issuing statements. He promises to continue efforts to consolidate public opinion for unifying the people and combating North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missiles.

The meeting kicked off with a presentation followed by designated debate and free debate among all participants.

As the first presenter, Hyun In-ae, Honorary Researcher of the Korea Institute for National Unification, stressed that boosting security consciousness and binding ability of people is required in accordance with the change in unification policies. “Religious groups and welfare sectors should also actively seek methods to change the North Korean system fundamentally. The two groups should raise public awareness of human rights infringement by North Korean leaders as well as the danger of developing nuclear technology, including rescuing people of religion who are detained in North Korea, sending Note TV and USB drives to North Korea, and enhancing broadcast against the North,” he explained.

As a designated debater, Jeong Hyun-moo, Deputy Director of the Unification Media Group, presented the "de facto tasks for enhancing broadcast against North Korea in status quo and enhancing the strategy of broadcasting against North Korea." Deputy Director Jeong cited the role and shortcomings of broadcasting tactics and suggested increasing the frequency and volume, diversifying and improving the quality, ensuring stable financial source for maintenance, and drawing the support and participation of the people.

A heated debate on the presentation followed, with people sharing common thoughts on taking steps to change the perceptions of North Korea at the religion and welfare level.
